Dogs, Especially Westies

Leaving my West Highland White Terrier, and best friend of 14 years, has been the most heart-wrenching, emotionally-draining event I have faced since I relocated. This trauma has been bleeding out into my journal and sketchbook.

What westies may lack in size, they make up for in confidence, agility, and cleverness. Tayen has been such a bright light in the darkest parts of my life, and I am so grateful for her gentleness, sweetness, and cuteness all these years. She never failed to love and encourage me when I was in need.

Dogs have this incredible ability to demonstrate forgiving, graceful, unconditional love for their humans. Even after fits of rage or periods of neglect, a dog who loves will still nudge their nose under the hand of a distressed owner to comfort them. Even when their poked twice daily with insulin needles and are fed only low-calorie food, a dog who loves will still wait by the door until its human comes home. A dog who loves will not remember any wrongs. A dog who loves will always be there when called. Dogs are generous with their love and always forgive. If a dog can love in this way, just imagine how much more God’s love is for us.

It was this love from my dog that reminded me to keep swinging at all of the challenges that life punches you in the face with. Thank God for dogs, especially Westies. And thank God for his amazing love.

Any other dog-crazies out there?
